New Biologics Treatments for Asthma

Do you suffer from severe eosinophilic asthma? Eosinophilic asthma is the most common type of asthma, and it can have serious health effects. Most of the time eosinophilic asthma is treated with inhalers and steroids, but these can also have long-term health effects. Now there are two new biologics treatments available for helping you manage your asthma symptoms.

Biologics Treatment

FASENRA

Fasenra is a new biologics treatment for severe eosinophilic asthma. It works by targeting eosinophils that cause asthma to reduce inflammation and to reduce the severity and frequency of asthma attacks. It is an injection that you receive to supplement your current asthma medications.

Fasenra is administered by injections on day one, at four weeks, and at eight weeks after the start of treatment. You will also continue to get the injections once every eight weeks until your doctor decides to stop the biologics.

NUCALA

Nucala is another biologic that is used for treatment of severe asthma. Like Fasenra, Nucala targets the eosinophils that cause asthma. It is also used in conjunction with your current asthma medications and is a supplemental treatment that can reduce the severity and frequency of asthma attacks. It is administered by injection about once every four weeks.

Choosing Between the Two

If you have severe eosinophilic asthma, either of these biologics may work for you. Because everyone’s body is different, the same biologic that works for someone else might not work for you. It is best to allow your doctor to determine which biologic will be best for your severe asthma. The best way to determine which, if any, of the biologics are right for you is to contact us for an appointment to discuss your options.
